13 Sep Scaffold Boards – Everything You Need To Know
Scaffold Boards supplied by Brookridge Timber Ltd are graded to BS2482:2009 Specification for Timber Scaffold Board.
Individual boards are graded for their strength not appearance and certain natural characteristics or “defects” are considered in deciding if a board is up to the required standard and limits are placed on these defects.
Natural characteristics on which there are limits include, rate of growth,
slope of grain, twist, bow, spring and knot size. More information on the limits for each of these defects can be found in the standard.
All boards should be free of any decay and insect holes and they must also be free of any abnormal damage or feature.
The tolerance on the dimensions of a graded scaffold board are as follows.
38mm x 225mm x 3.9m boards must be +/- 2mm in thickness and/or +/- 5mm in width and +/- 25mm on length.
The way boards are protected at their ends is also covered by BS2482:2009 Specification for Timber Scaffold Board. 38mm boards must have both ends bound with a 25mm wide x 0.6mm thick hoop which must extend a minimum of 150mm along each edge of the board. The standard also covers how these hoops should be fixed using rust proofed clout nails 30mm x 3mm
To confirm a manufacturer has adhered to all of the grading rules detailed above, each board must be marked as a minimum with the following.
- Manufacturer’s Identification
- Support Span
Other markings that can be useful include personalisation on the end of the board for identification purposes, details of the 3rd party assessment scheme and the SC12 grade
Details of how these marks may look are shown in the images below

The Scaffold Boards supplied by Brookridge Timber are strength graded to require a 1.2m support span when in use. These boards are either visually or machined graded.
There are other boards available allowing a longer support span.
A 38mm x 225mm x 3.9m board that has been specially machine graded can achieve a support span on 1.5m or a 63mm x 225mm x 3.9m which can be either visually or machine graded can achieve a support span of 2.5m. The most commonly use board however is the 38mm x 225mm x 3.9m board achieving a 1.2m span detailed earlier and offered ex stock by Brookridge Timber.
The Scaffold boards supplied by Brookridge Timber are also sourced from legal and sustainable sources and come with full FSC or PEFC certification.
